No surprises: Marco Mengoni won Sanremo Festival 2023 Image: Screen capture RAI 1

Marco Mengoni confirmed the favoritism and won the Sanremo Festival 2023 with the song Due vite and has now the right to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) – potentialy returning to the event ten years after.

The show of the final night of the Sanremo Festival began, as is traditional, with the Italian national anthem performed by the Banda Musicale dell’Aeronautica Militare. Elodie was the first of the 28 contestants to perform, while Sethu were the last.

Throughout the gala there were several special guests, such as Depeche Mode, Achille Lauro (San Marino representative at ESC 2022) or Ornella Vanoni. Amadeus, the main host, also read a letter sent by Volodymyr Zelensky: the President of Ukraine.

The classification between the sixth and the 28th places at the end of the five nights was announced and the top five went on to the second round: Lazza, Marco Mengoni, Mr. Rain, Tananai and Ultimo. They performed again and the scores returned to zero. The public (34 percent), the press room (33 percent) and the desmoscopic jury (33 percent) voted.

The final top five was announced and Marco Mengoni won with 45.53 percent of the votes, singing the song Due vite. It’s not known yet if Marco Mengoni will accept to represent Italy at ESC 2023.
