The vice-president of the Spanish government is against Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2024. Yolanda Díaz criticizes the actions of Israel in the Gaza conflict, which many consider to be a completely disproportionate response to Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.
In a post on social media X cited by the EFE news agency, the government official wrote about the ESC and Israel: “It is joy, peace, and diversity, not a showcase to whitewash Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people, which is death, destruction, and hatred”.
In Yolanda Díaz’s view, Israel is a country “incompatible with the values that the contest promotes and should not participate” in the event in Malmö.
Sumar, the party of the Spanish government’s vice-president, has even launched a petition to expel Israel from the ESC final, alleging that the army of that country is “exterminating the Palestinian people and ravaging their entire region”.
They also criticize the censorship of Eric Saade, who wore a traditional Palestinian scarf during his performance at the opening of the first semi-final: “It is intolerable that every time someone raises their voice to demand that this human massacre be stopped, there are those who protect the murders”.
