Swedish commentator Carolina Norén is calling for the end of the Big 5 in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). The Big 5 consists of five countries (Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom) that always qualify directly for the final due to their financial contributions.
This topic has always divided opinions, and for Carolina Norén, the Big 5 should be abolished. The commentator revealed to The Euro Trip podcast that she discussed this idea directly with the Executive Supervisor of the contest, Martin Österdahl:
– This is one thing I’ve been talking to Martin Österdahl about. I think you should take away the Big 5. Let just the winner be qualified directly to the final, and let everybody [else] compete in the same way through the semi-finals to the final”.
