Another unusual moment just hours before the final of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2024. During the last general rehearsal (the Afternoon Preview, with an audience at the Malmö Arena), Slimane stopped singing to appeal for peace.

In the a cappella part of the song, the representative of France did not sing, instead stating: “When I was a child, I dreamed about music, I dreamed about this dream to be a singer, to be sing peace. Here, every artist here, want to sing about love, to sing about peace. To sing about love, sing about peace. We need to be united by music, yes, but with love and peace”.

It is not clear whether Slimane’s message is related to all the controversial and tumultuous events since yesterday – including the disqualification of the Netherlands or the controversial participation of Israel and the alleged comments from Israeli television.

What is also unclear is what kind of consequences the singer and France may face. The rules do not allow for political messages, although in this case, Slimane did not refer to a specific situation.
