Sara Tavares passed away this Sunday at the age of 45. The singer won the Festival da Canção and represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in 1994 with the song Chamar a Música. She finished in eighth place.

The Lusa news agency, citing SIC Notícias, reports that Sara Tavares was hospitalized at Hospital da Luz in Lisbon. She had been diagnosed with a brain tumor several years ago.

Throughout her career, the singer of Cape Verdean descent had several hits starting in the 1990s. Her television debut was on the show «Chuva de Estrelas», while Chamar a Música was her first major hit.

Later on, Sara Tavares worked on projects closer to her Cape Verdean roots. An example of this is her most recent song, Kurtidu, released last September. She received various awards and distinctions, such as the Revelation Artist at BBC Radio 3 World Music and a nomination for the Latin Grammy Awards in 2018.

To Sara Tavares’ family, friends, close associates, and fans, e-FestivalCOM extends heartfelt condolences.
