In a Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2024 marked by several controversies, Portugal also ended up being involved in a case. The video of iolanda’s performance in the grand final took much longer than usual to be published on the event’s official YouTube channel. Despite calls for explanations, the president of RTP’s Board of Directors, Nicolau Santos, rejects the idea that leaving the contest is being considered.
In an interview with RTP 3, the leader noted the fact that the televote given to Israel was political. When asked if, given this, the broadcaster intends to continue participating, Nicolau Santos replied that there is nothing indicating an exit:
– I believe at the moment RTP does not have any decision not to participate in this contest. I think we have to improve the situation and see what we can do to make that happen. For now, obviously, there is no idea of withdraw – because our participation in Eurovision goes far beyond this event, including training, technical support, resources, etc. So, obviously, it doesn’t make much sense for Portugal to be considering withdrawing from Eurovision”.
