Nemo won the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2024 representing Switzerland this Saturday. With the song The Code, he was the clear favorite of the jury, ending up fifth in the public vote, although in the overall tally, he scored the highest number of points: 591.

In the press conference after the final, the artist explained that his participation in ESC was a mix of sadness about some less positive aspects and hope for what he saw:

–  I have to say this whole experience was really intense and not just pleasant all the way. There were a lot of things that didn’t seem it was all about love and unity, and that made me really sad. And at the same time there was so much love here as well and there was so much coming together and there was so many different cultures meeting and people that are just full of positivity, love for music, and that really gives me hope. I know these people exist and they exist in the world”.

Having said that, Nemo emphasized that something needs to change and be reflected upon: “But we need to work to create such an environment and we need to ask ourselves what is such an environment and what do we want to stand for. I really hope that Eurovision continues and can continue to stand for peace, love in the future. I think that still needs a lot of work”.

The reflection didn’t stop there, as they replied when asked if he would change anything about ESC: “I don’t think it’s necessarly in my power, but I think what is in our power also as artists and as contestants of this year is to continuously have this conversation about what Eurovision should be and we really need that. And I think, I hope so, so much that these coming weeks can be a ground for that and we can reevaluate what Eurovision stands for and what it should be”.
