Moldova has withdrawn from the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2025. The country’s national selection process was already underway, with auditions having taken place last Saturday.
However, this Wednesday, the broadcaster TRM announced the cancellation of Etapa Națională and the withdrawal from ESC 2025. The director of Moldova 1, Corneliu Durnescu, and the head of delegation, Daniela Crudu, cited the “current situation” and “economic, administrative, and artistic challenges”.
Corneliu Durnescu admitted that the auditions had generated a negative impression among the public, and that it is necessary to rethink the selection process for the future. He also mentioned “serious reservations about Moldova’s participation” from the music experts who were consulted.
It is a last-minute decision that could involve financial penalties from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Despite the withdrawal, TRM will broadcast the ESC semifinals and final.
